Exercise 1

Recognizing Parallel Structure

Directions: In the exercise that follows, you will need to determine whether or not sentences have parallel structure.

To maintain parallelism, you must list items with equal grammatical structure:

Sylvia asked to borrow a Fetch! , Fetch! , and Fetch!.

Sylvia needs to Eat! , Eat! , and Eat!.

An error occurs when the grammatical structure of one or more of the items does not match the others, like this:

Sylvia asked to borrow a Fetch! , Fetch! , and Eat!.

Sylvia needs to Eat! , Fetch! , and Eat!.

To keep track of your answers, print the accompanying handout. If you are unsure which choice to make, consult the rules.

Don't bark up the wrong tree!

Bark! Bark! Bark!
