Take another look at the sentence:

Sipping slowly, the diner counter was where Timothy enjoyed the hot soup.

Sipping slowly, a participle phrase, is right next to counter, an illogical target. Timothy, not the the counter, should be the one making all of that rude noise! Before you continue, review the rules for misplaced and dangling modifiers.
