You chose to transform the participle phrase into a subordinate clause and then connect it to the main clause that follows, like this:

Because he was bored with the revision of his research essay Patrick poked the soft front of his flat-screen monitor, fascinated by its squishy surface.

Unfortunately, to do this correctly, you would need a comma between essay and Patrick. Review the rules.
